Lewis Hamilton apologised for his Monaco madness - but vowed never to change the way he races. Hamilton did an amazing U-turn late last night by saying sorry to race rivals Felipe Massa and Pastor Maldonado. Having slammed stewards at Monte Carlo in a race rant for penalising him, and calling Massa and Maldonado "frickin' unbelievable" and "stupid", he issued a fulsome apology on Twitter. He said "Hey guys. I wanted to apologise 4 last weekends performance & also my comments after, I never meant to offend no 1." He added: "2 Massa & Maldonado, with the greatest respect I apologise if I offended u. Both of u r fantastic drivers who I regard highly." Earlier Hamilton vowed he would quit racing rather than change his controversial style. "In all honesty, I'll never stop racing the way I do," said Hamilton, who finished a disappointing sixth and now trails Sebastian Vettel by an enormous 58 points. "That's what got me here, it's the way I am. I don't do it to offend people or to hurt anyone. I do it because I love racing. I feel like I can do it better than others. "If it ever comes to a stage where I had to pull back and drive for fourth or fifth, that would not excite me. I probably wouldn't stay around for that. "I'm here to race and here to win. If I have to lose that passion, it blows all the racing." Swift action in returning to the stewards to explain his words appears, thus far, to have prevented further action for bringing the sport into disrepute. Asked earlier why he had appeared before them five times in six races, Hamilton responded, with a half-laugh: "Because I'm black. Isn't that what Ali G says?" In reality he was the architect of his own demise and his McLaren team had to accept their share of the blame. Another cock-up in qualifying, plus blunders at a pit stop and with a steering wheel, just increased the pressure. Hamilton revealed how his team had offered him the chance to retire when his wing was hanging off near the finish but he refused, consequently rescuing sixth place and eight points. "At the first pit-stop no one was there to change the tyres. So all the tension just boiled up," he added. "I had prepared myself the best this weekend, I was the fastest and I could have won the Grand Prix happily. "Some things get in your way and you just have to suck it up and move on." He is also hounded by his desire to match the feats of his idol Ayrton Senna who was ultimately defined by what he achieved here - six wins in seven years around the toughest track on earth. "The passion's even greater here than elsewhere. Honestly, in my heart of hearts I believe I can own this circuit," he added. "I feel I can be the fastest here. I was and not with the fastest car." "I will recover from this weekend. There's a long way to go."

@ 04:20Lewis Apolgises
Lewis Hamilton has apologised to Felipe Massa and Pastor Maldonado after criticising both drivers following the Monaco Grand Prix. It is the second climbdown Hamilton has been forced to make over comments the 26-year-old McLaren driver made after Sunday's race. Hamilton's attempts to pass Massa in his Ferrari and the Venezuelan rookie Maldonado in his Williams both ended in crashes as well as drive-through penalties for the Briton. Aside from blasting the stewards, with whom Hamilton has since made peace, he also slammed Massa and Maldonado, describing them as "ridiculous". But via Twitter and a series of four separate tweets, Hamilton attempted to clear the air with both men, along with fans he feels he may have offended by his remarks. "Hey guys. I wanted to apologise 4 last weekends performance & also my comments after, I never meant to offend no1," Hamilton tweeted. "I would also like to say thank u 2 everyone on here, 4 their positive messages & also 2 the angry messages. I can respect them both. "2 Massa & Maldonado, with the greatest respect I apologise if I offended u. Both of u r fantastic drivers who I regard highly. 2 my fans lost & my fans won, I wish u nothing but love & happiness. God Bless u. Onwards & upwards, Montreal next. Lewis." It is unclear yet whether Hamilton will personally apologise to both men at the next week's race in Canada.

Sunday, 29 May 2011 @ 09:32Lewis Project
Hi guys,As we all know, today was not a good one for Lewis. I'm sure many of his fans feel the same way; that Seb's car is just too fast and the championship is a bit ridiculous for anyone else. What upsets me is seeing Lewis get frustrated with himself as Vettel just extends his lead. I think it's time that Lewis' fans come out and show him our support. I've been a Nicole fan for years, and have been involved in a number of projects where fans send Nicole messages...I think it's time we do the same for Lewis. I am going to make a video for Lewis, which will be kindly passed on to Nicolas via DM, who can then show Lewis himself. This is your chance to tell Lewis exactly what you feel about him/his racing/why you are a fan/wish him luck etc etc ANYTHING at all. This is what I need from you: 1) A word you would use to describe Lewis. 2) Your personal message. As I am making a video this can be of any form, whether it is a written paragraph, video file, or graphic. If writing a message, this can generally be as long as you wish but remember other fans want to get their messages across too :) 3) Remember to include your name and country, that way Lewis can see the support he gets from all across the world. I want this video done in time for Canada, so please make sure any submissions are made before Saturday 4th June!! This gives you just under a week to get anything in to me :) the email is lewisproject@hotmail.co.uk Any questions you can tweet us @lewishonline. Let's show Lewis how proud we are!! Thank you |

Saturday, 28 May 2011 @ 12:32Q+A After Monaco Qualifying
After seeing one of your colleagues (Sergio Perez) crash so heavily, how difficult is it to get back in the car and head out on track? Lewis Hamilton: First of all I am relieved to hear that he is well. He was driving so well all weekend and my guess is that this race could have delivered a good result for him. As for me going out for a little over two minutes to finish Q3 - it is always difficult going out again after sitting so long in the car. You’re wondering if the track is safe and if the surface is safe. That is definitely on your mind. But you have to remind yourself that we are professionals and that racing is our job. We have seen two crashes at the same corner today. Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg crashed there in Practice Three, and then Perez in qualifying. How dangerous is that spot? LH: The whole track is dangerous. That’s what we love about it. It is bumpy of course, but it looked like he was going quite wide into it and lost the back end. This can happen to any one of us. This is the fastest part of the track and quick parts of tracks usually tend to trigger accidents. But I have to say the marshals did a fantastic job. How can you stay focused in those circumstances? LH: Staying focused is not a problem for us. I said a prayer for Sergio and then you sit there and stay composed. But then when I got out, the track was very difficult. I had quite a lot of understeer and no temperature in my brakes and no temperature tyres. It was one of the worst qualifying I have had in a long time. How disappointed are you? LH: If I take everything into account it was the strategy in Q3. Yes, we have been driving so well the whole weekend up until Q3 and I think I had the pace for pole position. Jenson did a very good job. We were advised by the engineers to do a stop towards the end of Q3, but obviously here in Monaco you shouldn’t take such a risk. But it is what it is. I will do the best job that I can. You can’t win from there, but I don’t give up and I’ll keep on pushing. It’s so difficult to overtake, what can you do? LH: Honestly, there is not much that you can do. As you just said it is almost impossible to overtake here and all I can do is try to score as many points as possible. Tomorrow is all about damage limitation. I am sure that Sebastian (Vettel) will walk away with it - it’s as simple as that. |

Thursday, 26 May 2011 @ 13:20'The Car Feels Fantastic'
Having previously said that Monaco could be the circuit where McLaren can get close to Red Bull in qualifying, Hamilton set the second fastest time just 0.1s behind Fernando Alonso during the afternoon session. He said that it was clearly going to be close at the front, but that he was happy with how the car had been set-up. "It's fantastic out there," Hamilton said. "I love the track, I love the weather. It's a beautiful place to be. I'm enjoying every lap I drive - and I've got the best view of the whole of Monaco when I'm in the car! I'm very happy to be here - I'm really pleased with the balance of the car and I kept out of trouble, but it's going to be close here." Hamilton also said that using all of the buttons on the steering wheel had become second nature, but that he may look to get a bit more out of the DRS and KERS during qualifying on Saturday. "You quickly get used to DRS and KERS Hybrid, but you're only really on it for the pit straight and up the hill; you tend not to use it through the slower sections. Maybe I'll find a few more places to use it for qualifying - but I'll keep that in my pocket! I just love driving the car here - it's the best thing I've ever done! It's so exciting - you can't afford to make mistakes, the car feels amazing when you're jumping from kerb to kerb, and there's no room for error. I want to win this grand prix!" |
